Hip Hop Congress to Host Battle in the Spring

SAN MARCOS, Texas, Nov. 19, 2011 -- Hip Hop Congress is hosting its fourth annual Epidemic battle April 18, 2012.

The event will take place at the Lyndon B. Johnson student center amphitheater at 6 pm on April 18, 2012 and is sponsored by Monster energy drink. There are multiple events that will be going on as the rap battle is taking place including vendor booths set up around the edge of the amphitheater as well as live graffiti.

“The Epidemic is aimed to shine light on the good side of rap music and graffiti,” Hip Hop Congress advisor Ariana Vargas said. “People come from Austin and San Antonio to be a part of this.”

Auditions will be held the same day as the battle and eight people will be chosen from those auditions. For more information on this event people contact the vice president of programs and marketing Mia Jackson at mj1205@txstate.edu.

Hip-Hop TRiO Student X-Change Stresses Importance of Higher Education

                 SAN MARCOS, Texas, Nov. 20, 2011-- High school students come to Texas State to learn and discuss the importance of education and recognize what higher education can do for their lives.

                The Hip Hop Congress is known throughout the local community for one of its signature projects, Hip-Hop TRiO Student X-Change. The program is sponsored and supported by the TRiO programs at Texas State. High school students learn in a conference theme about Texas State University, the importance of a college education, professionalism and hip hop culture from Texas State students.

                “It’s healthy, clean fun that we’ll be having for the students and in addition to that it will demonstrate diversity,” said Jesse Silva, organization adviser and student project coordinator for the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs.

“Hip-hop is very reaching in terms of demography,” he said. “Regardless of race, it makes for a good common ground for all students.”

                Each year 100-150 high school students from Central Texas attend the programs workshops and panel discussions. The Hip-Hop TRiO Student X-Change identifies higher education as a means to eliminate barriers to problems associated with socio-economic status and cultural diversity.

Hip Hop Congress Hosts Mixtape Potluck

            SAN MARCOS, Texas, Nov. 16, 2011— The Hip Hop Congress is hosting a Mixtape Potluck, which is a great opportunity to network with others and have others give suggestions.

            There will be artists, producers, designers and more to network with. The Mixtape Potluck will be held in the LBJ Student Center USAC room 4-9.1 at 7pm on Nov. 16.

            They will be discussing the mix tape that is currently in the works and would like to hear suggestions for the mix tape. The Hip Hop Congress is working on their third mix tape album and will be given out to students for free; there is no profit for the Hip Hop Congress. The most recent mix tape album was sent to New York City to be mixed.
            "We hope to get some great material for our third mix tape," said Mia Jackson, executive vice president and vice president of programs and marketing for the Hip Hop Congress. "This will be a great way to capitalize on feedback from others on your material and perfect your craft."

            People that attend are encouraged to bring food, drinks and snacks. This will be the social event to be at if you are trying to be on this underground mix tape.

Hip Hop Congress Offers Various Opportunities to Youth

SAN MARCOS, Texas, Nov. 16, 2011 -- Hip Hop Congress is offering alternative education to Central Texas children ranging from second grade to high school.

There are three different programs that Hip Hop Congress is offering. Congress Kidz offers two of these programs. CREAM, standing for Character Rules Everything Around Me, which is aimed for students in grades 2-4 and WORD UP, standing for Warning signs. Observe other’s actions. Report to authority. Don’t get involved. Use good judgment. Practice makes perfect, which is aimed for grades 3-5.

"Hip Hop TRiO Student X-Change is a program offered to high school students in the Central Texas area," Hip Hop Congress advisor Ariana Vagas said.

These programs are aimed to educate and inspire students to be successful in their overall education from secondary school on to college. For more information in participating or volunteering please contact Silva at js202@txstate.edu
